Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is a public medical university in Chandigarh. It is an 'Institute of National Importance', INI. It was conceived in 1960 as a center of excellence which would endeavour to develop patterns of teaching in postgraduate medical education in as many branches as possible and attempt to produce specialists in several disciplines of medicine. It was also envisaged that these specialists would spread out in the country in various medical colleges and medical institutions and impart medical education of highest standard to the students and set up nucleus of excellence in their own institutions. The PGIMER was also given the responsibility to broaden the horizons of medical knowledge by intensive research in the field of health. PGIMER is both an educational institute that imparts postgraduate medical training in several disciplines and a working hospital that provides inexpensive medical care to a large number of patients.
It is undoubtedly one of the highly-esteemed and top Medical education institute in India and in Asia. It functions directly under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and is recognized by National Medical Commission (NMC) with 326 seats in 20 disciplines of Post-Graduate studies and 98 seats in 38 disciplines of Super-Specialization studies. It is ranked 2nd among medical universities in India in 2020 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework.

It is the leading tertiary care hospital of the region and caters to patients from all over Punjab, J&K, Himachal Pradesh , Uttarakhand and Haryana. Apart from the clinical services, PGI also provides training in almost all disciplines of Medicine including post graduate and post doctoral degrees, diploma and fellowships. There are more than 50 such training courses in the institute. Since it is a post graduate institute, it does not have facilities for undergraduate MBBS courses.

Instituitional Set-up:
Nehru Hospital
The infrastructure for patient care includes the Nehru Hospital - a 1400 bedded hospital with 98 rooms in the 5 private wards and two research blocks for basic sciences. The infrastructure for teaching includes lecture theatres and conference halls, an auditorium with a seating capacity of 1000, a well-stocked library, computer facilities including internet/Email, and boarding and lodging facilities. Ancillary facilities include an animal house, a central workshop, a laundry and CSSD facilities. The teaching faculty consists of 330 highly qualified doctors. There are 246 Senior Residents, 370 Junior Residents registered for MD, MS, DM, M.Ch courses, 1072 students for Nursing courses and 569 for Paramedical courses at the Institute.
PGIMER is a referral centre for several northern states, and provides tertiary care, and emergency medical, surgical and intensive care services. It is one of the most prestigious medical institutes of national importance.
Advanced Paediatrics Centre:
This project was sanctioned in 1985 as multispeciality 300 beds hospital for children with all facilities under one roof at a cost of about Rs.50 crores. It was inaugurated by Dr.Shanker Dyal sharma President of India on May 22,1997. There are several specialties for the care of children such as Allergy Immunology, Haematology and Oncology, Pediatric Neurology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Genetics & Metabolism.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: Provides life support to 1000 babies & artificial ventilation to about 200 babies weighting above 500 gms every year.First DM (Neonatology) training program started in the country.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: More than 1000 children receive intensive care including 60 children who are provided artificial ventilation every year. There is a separate 24 hrs emergency service for children.
This centre also houses surgical specialties for children such as Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Orthopaedics.
The OPD Block:
OPD block is a spacious facility with a covered area of 274000 sq ft. More than 3500 patients attend it everyday. It functions as a complete day care hospital. It has comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services under one roof for 90 Special Clinics and 6 Operation Theatres. This block was Inaugurated on March 19,2001.
Advanced Eye Centre:
Advanced Eye Centre was inaugurated by Sh. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat Hon'ble Vice President of India in the august presence of Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss Hon'ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday, March 18, 2006. Since the year 1962, the department of Ophthalmology is engaged in providing ophthalmic care of the highest order not only to the people of Chandigarh and surrounding area but also to the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh,Jammu & Kashmir and the western Uttar Pradesh. Major areas of thrust are training of residents, research and patient care. In the last 43 years, 233 candidates from various parts of this country were trained successfully for MS degree in Ophthalmology. The centre runs several special clinics and services viz. Lens, Cornea, Uvea, Glaucoma, Retina and Vitreous, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Contact Lens & Low Vision Aids, Oculoplastic and Tumour Clinics. For the first time in this country, laser treatment of retinal diseases and glaucoma was started in July, 1989. Excellent patient care service is the most important objective of the centre.
Drug de-addiction centre:
Drug de-addiction centre is operational in PGIMER to take care of patients addicted to substance abuse. This centre is located near the OPD block and provides comprehensive care for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of these patients. The centre has recreational and indoor sports facilities.
Research Block:
There are two research blocks called Research Blocks A & B which house various basic science departments such as Biochemistry, Haematology, Pathology, Parasitology, Cytology, Virology, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Experimental Medicine & Biotechnology. There is an elaborate museum attached to the department of Anatomy. There is a separate Forensic Medicine department. The focus of research has been on tackling diseases like diarrhea, tuberculosis, malaria, amoebiasis, systemic vasculitis, relapsing polychondritis, HIV, leprosy, hepatitis, anaemia, leukaemia, hypertension, atherosclerosis, thalassemia, dental caries, Oral cancer, stone disease, cancer, and sexually transmitted diseases.

Dr. Tulsi Das Library, PGIMER, was established in 1962. It has 45696 books, 57610 bound journals and current journals (print/online) include 414 international and 96 national journals. At present the library has 4851 theses of MD, MS, DM, M.Ch and Ph.D from different disciplines. The library subscribes to online databases like Science Direct, MD consult, Wiley- Blackwell and Oxford Journals and 494 online full text journals.

Satellite center:
Initially announced in 2013, the PGIMER now has an operational satellite center at Sangrur in Punjab. In August 2017, the INR 495 crore budget for setting up a similar second satellite center at Una, Himachal Pradesh was approved. Third satellite center was approved at Firozpur, Punjab

The medical aspirants seeking MD/MS/MDS admission at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh will have to register themselves for the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh admission process by filling out their application form. GMCH, MD/MS/MDS admission is done on the basis of marks secured in NEET. There will be two rounds of Chandigarh NEET 2021 counseling and an additional mop-up round will be conducted by the authority if seats remain vacant.
After the release of the provisional GMCH MBBS PG merit list, the candidates whose names are included in it will have to take part in the document verification session. Candidates will have to furnish all the relevant documents to the authority for verification purposes. After the verification process, the authority will release the final Chandigarh MBBS PG merit list which includes the candidate's merit rank along with their NEET roll no. Candidates will be called for choice filling and locking of courses and colleges on the basis of their GMCH MBBS PG merit rank. The MCC/DGHS conducts Counseling for allotment of Post Graduate (MD/MS/Diploma and MDS) seats to the NEETPG/MDS eligible and qualified candidates in participating Government Medical/Dental Colleges of the country under 50% All India Quota and 100% Central & Deemed University quota every year. All the candidates who have qualified for All India Quota seats on the basis of their rank in NEET PG /MDS conducted by NBE including candidates from Union Territory of J&K will be eligible. The role of MCC of DGHS is limited to allotment of seats to the participating candidates, as per their merit and choice, which starts only after receiving the list/data/Information of successful candidates from National Board of Examinations (NBE) i.e. the NEET (PG) examination conducting body
Candidates who fall under the category of NRI as per the directions/ orders of Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in the case (W.P. No. 689/2017- Consortium of Deemed Universities in Karnataka (CODEUNIK) & Anr. Vs. Union of India &Ors.) dated 22-08- 2017 are eligible for NRI Category seats. OCI/PIO/Foreign Nationals will be eligible for only NRI seats .The eligible Indian National Candidates wanting to get converted to sponsored NRI category have to submit the documents as and when the same are called for by the MCC.

Eligibility Condition:
There are multiple rounds of counselling i.e. Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 & Stray Vacancy Round. ALL four rounds of AIQ, Deemed University, Central University/Institutes, DNB, are conducted by MCC through ONLINE ONLY i.e., Round 1, Round 2 , Round 3, and Stray Vacancy round. In the YEAR 2022–23 (Round 3) was called the Mop-Up round, where there was no sliding (upgradation) from the 2nd round to the mop-up round, but in 2023–2024, there was an upgradation from ROUND 2 to Round 3. In 2023-2024 Stray Vacancy Round was ONLINE, but in 2022-23 Stray Vacancy Round is conducted physically by the Deemed Universities for which the list of registered & eligible Candidates is forwarded by MCC to the respective Deemed Universities. The allotment shall only be in terms of merit. As per the directions issued by Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in SLA(C) No. 10487 of 2021, the AIQ scheme has been modified and 04 rounds of AIQ counselling will be conducted by MCC of DGHS, MoHFW. Hence, 3rd round (earlier mop-up round) and fourth round i.e. stray vacancy round will be conducted in AIQ from 2021-22 onwards.
