The Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences - VIMS which was previously known as Bellary Medical College located in Vijayanagara district, Bellary and is a Government College established in the Year 1961. It is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences - RGUHS, and is Recognized by National Medical Commission (NMC).  VIMS has an annual intake of 150 MBBS seats, 104 seats in 16 disciplines of Post-Graduate studies and 4 seats in 1 Super-Specialization study. The college is well-connected by Road and Rail route. VIMS, Bellary is committed to academic excellence in medical education with a working philosophy of Education, service and research. 

The Medical College is located in the vast former Allipur Jail Complex which is spread over 173 acres of land. This jail was closed in 1958 and the old buildings and entire area of 173 acres (0.70 km2) was handed over by the Government to start the Medical College in Bellary in 1961. To overcome the shortcomings the Medical College was made autonomous Institution "Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bellary" in 1996. 

It has spacious Classrooms, Lecture halls, Demonstration halls. The well-equipped, modernized, and latest Technology-driven equipment make the Laboratory unique. A separate lecture hall complex called as “B.C Roy Hall’’ of four well-furnished air-conditioned theater type individual lecture halls are available for regular teaching purpose. A separate air-conditioned mini auditorium of 300 seating capacity called “Shikshakara Bhavana” is available for conducting conferences and continuing medical education (CME) and workshops. A separate auditorium “Sababhavana” that can occupy than 1000 members are available for conduction college day, convocation, university examinations and other major functions.  Two play grounds, one for conducting major sports events with gallery facility is situated in the entrance of VIMS campus, a small play ground near boys hostel for regular college events is available. There are separate hostel blocks for boys and girls and staff quarters facilities are also present.

The VIMS Medical College Hospital 

The Medical College Hospital was commissioned in 1966 and has bed strength of 680 beds. The District Hospital is situated in the heart of city and is spread over an area of 15 acres and has bed strength of 210 for the pediatrics, Gynaecology and Post Partum Cases. Recently 20 bedded Infosys ward was added for the treatment of Japanese Encephalitis cases. To bring all departments under one roof, for the purpose of better-coordinated teaching and better treatment to the patients even these two departments of Gynaecology and Paediatrics department will be shifted to VIMS campus before the end of this year to the newly constructed wards in the VIMS campus. The other associated Hospitals include: Government Wellesly TB & Chest Diseases Hospital was started in 1929 over spacious area of 20 acres and has a bed strength of 280 beds., The Urban Health Center in the heart of the City was constructed in 1999 and about 120 to 140 patients are treated as outpatients daily in this center. A Super-Speciality Trauma Care Hospital is functional in VIMS to treat emergency cases. 

It has 24X7 Emergency and Trauma care, Blood bank facilities. There are well-equipped clinical and diagnostic facilities to serve people. There are advanced major and minor operation Theatres with good ICU facilities. On an average 10000 to 12000 operations are being done every year. The Burns ward has around 30 to 40 beds. The Hospital is equipped with the latest sophisticated 14 dialysis equipments. Senior citizen treatment (Geriartric ward was established in VIMS Hospital). The Hospital's general specialities include General Medicine, General Surgery, OBG, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiodiagnosis, ENT, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Forensic Medicine. The Super Specialities include Urology, Nephrology, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Neurology, Neuro Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, and Cardiology.

    KEA – Karnataka Examination Authority conducts counselling for Government Medical College (50% seats and another 50% will be conducted by MCC), 100% seat allotment in Private Medical College by KEA (which includes Non-Minority, Linguistic minority, Religious minority institutions).
