The Attached Hospitals - CMC & Hospital

Christian Medical College Vellore was started as a one-bedded clinic-cum-dispensary in 1900 by Dr Ida Sophia Scudder, the daughter of second-generation medical missionaries. Today, this healthcare organisation of international repute includes a network of primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary care hospitals, with around 4500 beds spread across six campuses in and around Vellore, and in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh.  The Kannigapuram Campus, the seventh and most recent addition, where construction is currently going on , will soon be home to a Level I Trauma Centre, the first of its kind in the State.

The main hospital is situated in the 19-acre Town Campus (earlier referred to as the Thottappalayam Campus) in the heart of Vellore town. The hospital complex is the site for clinical training for all the students. The vast majority of the clinical departments are located on the hospital campus.  From April 2016 to March 2017, the hospital, which has close to 2500 beds, received more than 21 lakh outpatients, more than a lakh inpatients and recorded more than 14, 500 births. Housing for doctors, and patient relatives is also available at the Town Campus, which has various amenities like institutional canteens, ATMs, post offices, provision shops, gift stores and so on, in its premises. The town campus or Hospital Campus is located at the centre of Vellore town and is six kilometres south from the Katpadi Railway Station. This campus houses the main hospital, hostels for nurses (staff and students) and some accommodation for faculty. There are numerous commercial boarding and lodging facilities around the town campus. Situated 7 km. south of the main hospital is the College campus set in a green, quiet and calm 200-acre site. Classrooms and laboratories for pre-clinical students are on this campus. A majority of the faculty stay on this campus.

The Schell Campus is the oldest campus primarily serving patients with ophthalmological problems. Apart from the Department of Ophthalmology, it also houses the Low Cost Effective Care Unit (LCECU) of the Department of Family Medicine. The LCECU was started on December 1982, in response to the needs of the poor in Vellore town. From April 2016 to March 2017, the 100-bedded Ophthalmology department at the Schell Campus catered to more than one lakh twenty thousand outpatients and close to 8000 inpatients. During the same period, the 48-bedded LCECU had close to 69,000 outpatients, more than 1700 inpatients and 148 births.

The Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA) was started by CMC as a response to the felt need for providing health care services to a most backward rural development block in Vellore district – K V Kuppam Block. The Block is one of the 20 government administrative blocks that make up the Vellore administrative district in Tamil Nadu and there are 39 panchayats and 89 revenue villages within the block.

Chittoor Campus To cater to the needs of the growing population, CMC Vellore has branched out its services as an exclusive hospital campus at Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh since the year 2011. The CMC Vellore Chittoor campus is located around 29 km away from CMC Vellore hospital. Quality medical care with optimal attention to patients forms the central vision of this institution.

Kannigapuram was an unfamiliar name of a village in Vellore till ten years ago. Today it is the venue of the new CMC hospital under construction which is coming up in 80 acres of land. The services that will move into the Kannigapuram Campus include those disciplines that attract larger number of patients from outside Vellore. Diverting them to a new location will release vital space in the town campus to the citizens of Vellore for basic specialities. Neurosciences, Cardio Pulmonary Sciences, Integrated Cancer Care, Renal Sciences, Haematology and a multilevel intensive care are planned to move in the first phase of development.
