Government Medical College and Hospital, Aurangabad is one of the premiere Medical colleges in Maharashtra and biggest tertiary care hospital for whole Marathwada Region. The Medical College and Hospital is commonly known as GHATI and was established in July- August 1956. It is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) and recognized by Govt. of India and the National Medical Commission (NMC). It has an annual intake of 200 seats in MBBS, 176 seats in 22 disciplines of Post-Graduate studies and 4 seats in 2 disciplines of super- Specialization studies. 

The Medical College and Hospital is situated in the heart of the city with an area of 99 acres of land and with 30 buildings. The main administrative and teaching building of college is a four story tall building; built in colonial style with red stones, stone pillars and broad doorways. The main building contains various offices on ground floor, Dean's office on first floor, number of lecture theaters, anatomy museum, pathology museum, PSM museum, canteen and an auditorium with seating capacity of 800. The other buildings in campus include Out Patient Block (OPD), Surgical and OBGY wards block, Medicine wards and Super-Speciality (Cardiology & CVTS) unit. Government Dental College which offers BDS degree is also located in the same premises. The College has a library with a good collection of medical text books, national and international journals of different faculties and various other referral books. Two separate reading rooms are available for undergraduate and post graduate students. The College maintains a gymkhana to provide facilities for sports and recreation for students and faculty members inside the campus. The gymkhana includes table tennis court, badminton court and volleyball court. The GMC provides residential facility for all its faculty members, staff and students inside the campus. There are two hostels for male undergraduate students (Old and New Boys Hostel), a single hostel for female undergraduate students and a separate hostel for Nursing students. Post-graduate students have a separate residential block. The quarters for nursing and other staff are also located inside the campus. The college has the pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical disciplines. 

The Attached Hospital

The hospital which started with only 300 beds in 1960 is now catering to 1177 in-patients in various medical specialties. It caters medical services with ultra-modern facilities for patient care on outpatient basis (OPD) and in patient basis (IPD).The patient flow on an average was 27810/month OPD and 5650/month IPD in the year 2010-2011. The special facilities available at GMCH, Aurangabad include Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Intensive Coronary Care Unit (ICCU), Medicine Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), CT scan, MRI and a blood bank amongst other facilities. It is backed up by Central & Departmental Laboratories for all the investigations round the clock. To provide a quality healthcare for people in rural area, the Preventive and Social Medicine (PSM) department of GMC operates one rural health and training centre at Paithan 50 km from Aurangabad. The PSM department also operates one urban healthcare centre in the Shahganj area of Aurangabad.

Specialty services have been the reason behind the phenomenal growth of this hospital. The hospital has Super-specialty setup CVTS (cardiovascular thoracic surgery) rendering services of great standards. With the availability of more facilities and resources, super-specialty courses like Cardiology, Cardiothoracic surgery, Anesthesiology, Transfusion medicine etc. are provided. The Biggest boon to the people of Marathwada region will be “Government Cancer Hospital”. It is 100 bedded hospital, and will be providing State of the art facilities for Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy and Operative treatment to cancer patients. This cancer hospital will cater services to patients of Marathwada, Vidarbha & Khandesh. State of art Trauma Care Centre provide quality services for the patient. The ART is Anti-Retroviral Therapy center running successfully with perfectly trained staff and dynamic team effort. 

Research Activities at GMCH: Both non-clinical and clinical departments of the GMCH are involved in active research in number of fields. Faculty and students of the GMCH have their research papers published in number of national and international journals. Sandfly fever, an aroboviral disease is known to occur in the arid regions of West Pakistan and Middle East. Its occurrence in India was thought to be doubtful. However, in 1967, the sandfly fever virus was isolated in Aurangabad from febrile cases.

    Government Medical College and Hospital (MEDICAL SCIENCES)-NEETPG Counseling is Conducted by 1) MCC (Medical Counselling Committee)( Open To All )and 2)State Common Entrance Test Cell, Mumbai  (State Domicile)

    The MCC (Medical Counselling Committee)/DGHS conducts Counseling for allotment of Post Graduate (MD/MS/Diploma and MDS) seats to the NEETPG/MDS eligible and qualified candidates in participating Government Medical/Dental Colleges of the country under 50% All India Quota and 100% Central & Deemed University quota every year. All the candidates who have qualified for All India Quota seats on the basis of their rank in NEET PG /MDS conducted by NBE including candidates from Union Territory of J&K will be eligible. The role of MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) of DGHS is limited to the allotment of seats to the participating candidates, as per their merit and choice, which starts only after receiving the list/data/Information of successful candidates from the National Board of Examinations (NBE) i.e. the NEET (PG) examination conducting body 

     There will be four rounds of AIQ counseling i.e. Round 1, Round 2, AIQ Mop-up Rounds and AIQ Stray Vacancy Round (SLA(C) No. 10487 of 2021 before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India). All candidates who have qualified for All India Quota seats based on their rank in NEET PG conducted by the National Board of Examination (NBE) will be eligible for participation in the counseling process. (Those who registered but were not allotted a seat in Round-1 & Round-2 need not register again).
