About College

The Indira Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute is a Government College established in the Year 2010. The college is recognized by Govt. of India and the National Medical Commission (NMC)  is affiliated with Pondicherry University. It  has an annual intake of 180 seats in MBBS and 17 seats in 6 disciplines of Postgraduate studies. This is the first ever Government Medical College in the Union Territory of Puducherry by registering a society called the Pondicherry Medical College Society, later renamed as Puducherry Medical College Society.

The college is spread over an area of 40 acres, with a beautiful infrastructure with 2.8 lakh square feet built up area (5 floors). Two more floors will be constructed to accommodate Post Graduate Courses subsequently. There are spacious classrooms, Lecture halls to accommodate around 250+, Examination rooms, Demonstration rooms, Seminar halls. There are Departmental museums and well-equipped Laboratories. There is a huge Auditorium located deep inside the campus with a seating capacity of 800 and with an open air theatre. There are good Canteens and Recreation halls are amongst the best. Hostels for students are constructed in 4 separate blocks accommodating 740 students (5 floors each) overlooking a cricket ground. A 400 m athletics track is also a part of this campus. Sports and fitness facilities like Swimming Pool/Gymnasium/Indoor Sports Complex/Cricket Stadium of International Standard and other facilities are being planned in the campus. Resident Doctors hostel (2 blocks of 9 floors each) for accommodating 360 doctors inside the campus is being constructed. Total built up area is 6762 sq.m. Food facilities for the students, staff, doctors and visitors will be from a modern central food centre. The college has a spacious library area with an excellent collection of Medical books with International and National Journals, back volumes, Atlases, Dictionaries, Directories, Encyclopaedias, Technical Reports. There are separate Reading rooms and the E- library has good Internet facility. The college has pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical disciplines.

The Attached Hospital 

A state of the art 5 floor Hospital building with 970 beds initially to be increased to 8 floors in future to accommodate Super Specialty Departments. A fully air-conditioned OPD of around 1.25 lakh square feet is planned in the ground floor of the hospital building. 15 Operation Theatres all with laminar floor and state of the art ICUs are a part of the plan. 18 Specialty Operation Theatres for six super-specialty departments are to come up in the future. The total area under construction for the hospital block is 5.8 lakh square feet. The ICUs planned include Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU, Surgical ICU, Coronary Care Unit, Medical ICU, Respiratory ICU , Obstetric & Gynecology ICU and General ICU. There will be a total of nearly 80 ICUs beds.

  • Admission Process

    Indira Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute MDS (Master Degrees in Dental Sciences ) Counseling is conducted by 1) MCC (Medical Counselling Committee)( Open To All )and 2) Centralised Admission Committee (Centac) (State Domicile)

    1 ) MCC (Medical Counselling Committee)(50%) (Open To All )

    The MCC (Medical Counselling Committee)/DGHS conducts Counseling for allotment of Post Graduate (MD/MS/Diploma and MDS) seats to the NEETPG/MDS eligible and qualified candidates in participating Government Medical/Dental Colleges of the country under 50% All India Quota and 100% Central & Deemed University quota every year. All the candidates who have qualified for All India Quota seats on the basis of their rank in NEET PG /MDS conducted by NBE including candidates from Union Territory of J&K will be eligible. The role of MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) of DGHS is limited to allotment of seats to the participating candidates, as per their merit and choice, which starts only after receiving the list/data/Information of successful candidates from National Board of Examinations (NBE) i.e. the NEET (MDS) examination conducting body 

     There will be four rounds of AIQ counseling i.e. Round 1, Round 2, AIQ Mop-up Rounds and AIQ Stray Vacancy Round (SLA(C) No. 10487 of 2021 before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India). All candidates who have qualified for All India Quota seats on the basis of their rank in NEET MDS conducted by the National Board of Examination (NBE) will be eligible for participation in the counselling process. Eligible candidates may download the Rank letter/ Result from NBE website

    • Candidates who registered for Round-1 and did not get any seat allotted are not required to register again.
    • Candidates who have Resigned / Not reported in Round-1 need not register again.

    Who registered in Round-2 & exited with Forfeiture of fees without joining can register again with payment of fees. However, candidates who have already joined and taken admission upto Round-2 of AIQ/Deemed/ Central Universities/DNB will not be eligible to participate in Mop Up Round and Stray Vacancy Round. (Those who registered but were not allotted a seat in Round-1 & Round-2 need not register again).

    CENTAC  will conduct counseling for allotment of candidates to Post Graduate Medical / Dental courses for seats available in Government Colleges, Government Quota seats in Private Colleges, Management Quota, Linguistic (Telugu) Minority and Religious (Christian) Minority Quota seats in Private Colleges and NRI seat in PG Dental (M.D.S.) in Mahatma Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Dental Sciences, Puducherry. Round 1 and Round 2 allotment will be Online. Mop up and Stray vacancy Counselling can be either Online or Offline.

    Students should be citizens of India. Students seeking admission to PG Medical Courses should have qualified in the NEET-PG conducted by the National Board of Examinations.

    For Government Seats and Govt. Quota Seats in Private Dental/Medical Colleges

    Apart from the above eligibility criteria, students who are claiming Government Quota seats should be residents of U.T. of Puducherry and they have to furnish a residence certificate issued by the competent authority. If the residence certificate is not produced, then they will not be eligible for Government Quota.

    The candidate must have passed final M.B.B.S. examination (for MD/MS) and BDS examination (for MDS Course) from any recognized Institution / University and must have completed satisfactorily one year compulsory rotating internship as on 31.06.2023* (PG MEDICAL)

    Not Eligible:-

    A candidate who has joined a Post Graduate Degree course in any branch and discontinued the course on any grounds after the cutoff date fixed by the National Medical Commission are not eligible to apply for two subsequent academic years.
    A candidate who took an allotment for PG Degree course in any branch in the final phase counseling and not joined the course on or before the cutoff date is not eligible to apply for two subsequent academic years.
    A candidate who is undergoing a Post Graduate Degree course is not eligible to apply for any Post Graduate Degree.
    A candidate who is completing a Diploma Course (including All India Quota) is not eligible to apply for any Post Graduate Degree Courses in the same academic year.
    A candidate with a Post Graduate Degree is not eligible to apply for admission to any other Post Graduate Degree Course. However, a candidate who is a  Diploma holder is eligible to apply for Post Graduate Degree Course.

    Merit List will be drawn based on NEET-PG  rank CENTAC will publish the following merit lists for allotment purpose 

    • Merit List for Government Quota for allotment to Govt. Seats in Govt. Medical College and Govt. Quota Seats in Private Medical Colleges
    • Merit List for Management Quota Seats in Private Medical Colleges.


    Counselling Procedure

    • Admission to the PG Medical (MD/MS) courses is based on the NEET-PG  Rank.
    • Round 1 and Round 2 allotment will be Online. Mopup and Stray vacancy Counselling can be either Online or Offline. CENTAC reserves the right to do either Online or Offline counselling based on necessity.
    • Online allotment will be done based on the candidate’s course preferences, category of seats, reservation and NEET-PG Rank.
    • Both Round 1 and Round 2 allotment is based on the course preferences submitted by the candidates before the last date for updating the course preferences. If the course preferences are empty, then allotment will not be done.
    • After publishing the provisional allotment list, allotted candidates should download the Allotment Order from the dashboard using their Login credentials.
    • Allotted candidates will be instructed to report to the college with the copy of the Application form, Provisional Allotment Order and all other original certificates within the scheduled date and time.
    • After verification of the originals and payment of fees, colleges will confirm the provisional admission of the candidates and issue the Admission slip to the candidate

    Mopup and Stray Vacancy Counselling – Detailed Guidelines will be published in CENTAC website before the counselling as per instructions received from the competent authority of Government of Puducherry


    1. If any seat is allotted during sliding after round 1, seat allotted in previous round will be automatically forfeited.
    2. Sliding from one college to another college is permitted during counseling only, based on merit and rule of reservation.
    3. Individual request for transfer of college will not be permitted under any circumstances.
    4. Mutual transfers will not be permitted under any circumstances

    Steps For Filling Up The Application

    All the candidates seeking admission to the Post-graduate Medical / Dental (MD / MS/ MDS) courses are required to apply online on website

    As a first time user, candidate shall create the login details as per the following steps:-

    1. On the “New Registration” page, candidate has to enter a valid Mobile Number and Email ID which would be used for any future communication for admission purpose. The candidate should take utmost care in providing the Mobile Number and Email ID, as all communications from CENTAC will be sent to the same
    2. Candidate shall then create a new password (of maximum six characters) for online registration purpose. This password need not be the same as candidate’s email account password, which is used to access one’s email account
    3. Candidate shall provide a valid mobile phone number (10 digit number without any prefix).
    4. Please verify that all the details given in the form are correct. This information will be used during the entire admission process. No change/modification will be allowed. Please be careful in filling up the required information in all aspect
    After successful registration the applicant shall login by using their “registered email-id” and “password” to fill the online application form.

    Applicant shall upload the following documents (wherever necessary):-

    1. Passport size photograph of the applicant (20 to 50 KB)
    2. Scanned signature of the applicant(20 to 50 KB)
    3. Self attested copy of High School/Higher Secondary Certificate/Birth Certificate for verification of date of birth (100 to 500 KB).
    4. Self attested copy of certificate in support of educational qualifications: MBBS Degree/BDS Degree as per requirement of the course (100 to 500 KB).Self attested copy of Residence/ Community / EWS / Freedom Fighter / Ex-Serviceman/ Person with Disabilities/Sports certificates, if applicable (100 to 500 KB).
    5. Self attested copy of Admit Card of NEET-PG/NEET-MDS (100 to 500 KB).
    6. Self attested copy of Score card of NEET-PG/NEET-MDS-(100 to 500 KB).
    Once all the above-mentioned files are uploaded, applicant can proceed with “Make Payment”. Applicant can also update the uploaded files and application form using “Back button” before making payment.  Once payment is made, no changes can be made in the application
    The application submission process shall be completed only after making payment of the online application fee by the candidate.
