About College

Andhra Medical College (AMC) is the oldest medical college in Andhra Pradesh and the sixth oldest in India. It came into being on 19th July 1923 and rapidly acquired national attention as a center of higher learning in medical education. The first principal was Captain F. J. Anderson and 32 students were admitted in that year. The ‘medical school’ was initially affiliated to Madras University. AMC students have been well know nationally and internationally, not only for their excellence in academics but also in the areas of sports and cultural activities. The students have shown a strong patriotic spirit since the very early days and participated in many struggles to achieve the freedom that we continue to firmly believe in. 

Medical Education Cell (MEC) at AMC, Visakhapatnam was conceptualized on 22nd Jan 1995 by Dr.C.Syamalamma Principal , Andhra Medical college with the aim to keep faculty members and students abreast with latest trends in teaching methodologies and advancements in clinical and basic sciences. It was created to accomplish requirements of teacher and also learners with respect to medical education. In addition, support and strengthen high quality research activity by imparting desired knowledge on research methodology and ethics to researchers. Since its inception it has tried to keep pace with growth of the Institution from a medical teaching college to a full-fledged tertiary care teaching hospital. It is steadily moving towards achieving the desired objective and is in the phase of building up of resources and utilizing the available things for best outcome. Dr R Rednam Surya Prasada Rao professor of ophthalmology who trained many ophthalmologist is considered teacher per excellence As an honor Government Regional Eye Hospital was named after him. Dr M Suryanarayana Murthy professor of Ophthalmology was considered as one of the greatest teachers which Andhra Medical College ever produced. His encyclopedic knowledge use to enthrall the students. He was called the "Walking Duke Elder" ho wrote 16 volumes on eye called the system of Ophthalmology.

The college is recognized by Govt. of India and the National Medical Commission (NMC)   and is affiliated with Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada. The College has an annual in take of 250 MBBS seats, 210 seats in 22 disciplines of Post-Graduate studies and 25 seats in 9 disciplines of Super-Specialization studies.

The medical college has a unitary campus of more than 25 acres. The administrative block has Principals office (50 Sq.m) Staff Room (60 Sq.m)College Council Room (82 Sq.m)Office superintendent Room (15 Sq.m) Office (200 Sq.m)Record room (100 Sq.m). There are separate common rooms for Male and Female students with attached Bathroom near the Administrative block. Six lecture hall of which five are having 250 capacity and one with 500 capacity. All lecture halls are provided with Audio visual aids. An auditorium with 2000 Sq.m.(presently damaged due to Hudhud cyclone and is proposed to be rebuilt). There is an Animal house Under the Department of Pharmacology. An air-conditioned Central Library (3400 Sq.m) There is a 24 Hours reading room out side the central library for 200 students. There are Staff room , librarian room, journal room, airconditioned computer room with Medlar and internet facility with 25 nodes present. There are good play grounds and a gymnasium for the staff and students. There is a full time qualified Physical Education instructor looking after the sports activity and maintenance. The college has won many championship shields in different competition held statewide and national wide. There are six laboratories which are being used by Physiology biochemistry pathology, histology, histopathology, clinical pharmacology, Heamatology, Microbiology and community medicine. Apart from these Anatomy, Pathology ,Pharmacology ,Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, departments are having museums. There is a fully equipped central research lab under control of the Principal. There are separate Hostel facilities for Boys & Girls.

These Teaching Hospitals are attached with the Andhra Medical College:

King George Hospital : King George Hospital (shortly KGH) is a Government General Hospital located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. It is the largest and busiest government hospital in Andhra Pradesh. The hospital served the needs of north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjacent Orissa for more than 150 years. The hospital sees over 1250 outpatients everyday in various departments. Laboratory tests can be done inside the hospital. 

The Government Victoria General Hospital : Generally called as Gosha Hospital which is first women and children hospital in the Visakhapatnam city which has served more than a century is located at Chengal Rao Peta, Visakhapatnam. This hospital service for women and children's with current capacity of this hospital is 200 beds and Government of Andhra Pradesh expanding it with 100 more beds.

Government Hospital For Mental Care: The Government Hospital for Mental Care was one of the earliest mental care hospitals. is run by Government of Andhra Pradesh located at Chinna Waltair, Visakhapatnam, India. It was established in the year of 1871 with 94 patients. In the present day (2019) it has 300 beds, which will be enhanced to 450.

Rani Chandramani Devi Government Hospital: is a children's hospital located at Pedda Waltair, Visakhapatnam. The hospital was started with 20 beds, later expanded to 100 beds.

Government TB and Chest Hospital : It is all so called as Government Hospital for Chest and Communicable Diseases is located at Pedda Waltair, Visakhapatnam. it's one of the important government hospital in the City. The hospital gives services for Swine influenza, Pneumonia, Interstitial lung disease and TB Cases. This hospital was the only test multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB)samples in the state of Andhra Pradesh before establishing the testing center of Anantapur.

Government Regional Eye Hospital : also known as Dr. Rednam Surya Prasadrao Government Regional Eye Hospital, is located in Rama Talkies Road, Visakhapatnam. It is the only government eye hospital serving Andhra Pradesh. 

Government ENT Hospital : which serves ear, nose and throat Diseases across Coastal Andhra, is located in Pedda Waltair, Visakhapatnam. The hospital started a cochlear implant surgery programme in 2015.

Admissions Into The Post Graduate Medical Degree / Diploma Courses Of Competent Quota (CQ) Counselling  NTRUHS-50%

Government Medical Colleges: 50% of the total available seats are AIQ. The remaining 50% of seats are in State Quota under the Competent Authority. Private Un-Aided Non-Minority Medical Colleges: 50% of the total available seats are in the Competent Authority Quota. The remaining 50% of seats are Management Quota. Sri Venkateshwara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati (SVIMS): 50% seats of the total available seats are State quota under Competent Authority

RESERVATION IN FAVOUR OF THE LOCAL CANDIDATES

Admission to 85% of the seats shall be reserved in favour of the local candidates in relation to the local area as provided in A.P. Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission) order, 1974 for Non- State-Wide courses as given in Annexure-III of GO (P) No. 646, Edu. (W1) Department, dt.10-7-1979.

STATE-WIDE COURSES: The courses at Govt. Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada are State-Wide  courses and admission into these Courses shall be regulated as per the provisions in the A.P. Educational Institutions (Regulation of  Admission)  Order,  1974  for  State-Wide courses as given in Annexure-IV of GO (P) No. 646, Edu. (W1) Dept, dt.10-7-1979.

Andhra University, (Nagarjuna University)

The part of the State comprising the Districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam shall be regarded as the local area for the purposes of admission to the Andhra University,(Nagarjuna University) and to any other Education Institution ( other than a State-wide University or State-wide Educational Institution) which is subject to the control of the State Government and is situated in that part

Osmania University, (the Kakatiya University)

The part of the State comprising the Districts of Telangana State shall be regarded as local area for the purposes of admission to  the  Osmania University, (the Kakatiya University) and to any other educational institution (other than a State-wide University or State-wide Educational Institution) which is subject to the control of  the State  Government  and  is  situated in that part.

Sri Venkateswara University 

The part of the State comprising the  Districts  of  Ananthapur,  Kadapa, Kurnool ,Chittoor and Nellore shall be regarded  as  local  area  for  the purposes of admission to Sri Venkateswara University and to any other educational institution (other than a State-wide University or State-wide Educational Institution) which is subject to the control of  the  State Government and is situated in that part.

LOCAL CANDIDATES:A Candidate for admission shall be regarded as local candidate in relation to a local area.

If he / she studied in an Educational Institution or Educational  Institutions in such local area for a period of not less than 4 consecutive  academic years ending with the academic year in which he / she appeared or  as the case may be first  appeared  in relevant qualifying  examination.
Where during the whole or any part of the 4  consecutive  academic years ending with the academic year in which he / she appeared or as the case may be first appeared for the relevant qualifying examination, he /she has  not studied in Educational Institutions,  if  he / she had resided  in that  local area for a period of not less than 4 years immediately preceding the date of commencement of the relevant qualifying examination in which he/she appeared or as the case may be first appeared
For State Wide Colleges : A candidate who is not regarded as a local candidate under sub-regulation Above in relation to any local area shall

If he/she has studied in educational institutions in the State for a period of not less than 7 consecutive academic years ending  with academic year in which he / she appeared or as the case may be first appeared for the relevant qualifying examination be regarded as local candidate in relation to:

  1. Such local area where he/she has studied for the maximum period out of the said period of 7 years.
  2. Where the period of his/her study in two or more local areas are equal, such local area where he/she has last studied in such equal periods

If during the whole or any part of the  seven  consecutive academic  years ending with  academic year in  which he/she appeared or as the case may  be first appeared for relevant qualifying examination, he / she has not studied in the educational institution in any local area, but he / she  has  resided in  the State during the whole of the said period of 7 years be regarded as a local candidate in relation to

  1. Such local area where he/she has resided for the maximum period out of the said period of 7 years.              (or)
  2. Where the period of his/her residence in two or  more  local areas  are equal, such local area where he/she  has  resided last  in  such  equal periods.

  • Candidates who are spouses of the local candidates as per Regulation - 3.4

RESERVATIONS:

1. Seats of Post Graduate Degree and Diploma Courses are reserved for SC, ST, BC, and BC sub groups as detailed below, which are called vertical reservations. 

  • SC Category – 15%
  • ST Category – 06%
  • BC Category – 29% (BC-A-7%, BC-B-10%, BC-C-1%, BC-D-7% & BC-E-4%).

2. Candidates claiming reservations under SC/ST/BC categories shall submit a permanent social status certificate issued by Andhra Pradesh Government as specified in the application form. The social status of SC/ST/BC candidates shall be subject to scrutiny as per G.O.Ms.No.58 SW (J) Dept. Dt 12-5-97. 

3. seats of Post Graduate Degree and Diploma Courses as per NMC guidelines shall be reserved for women and differently-abled candidates, which are horizontal reservations for PG (Medical) Courses as detailed below. Women reservation - 33 1/3% Physically Challenged - 5% 

RESERVATIONS FOR ECONOMICALLY WEAKER SECTIONS (EWS): The reservation of 10% in favor of Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in admissions will be implemented only if seats are sanctioned for EWS Quota by Govt. of India / National Medical Council for the academic year . 

4. The candidates seeking the benefit of reservation under the PwD category should enclose a valid disability certificate issued within three months prior to presenting / her application. The guidelines of Govt. of India and regulations of the National Medical Council shall be observed in making admissions of persons with disabilities (PwD candidates). The Medical Board constituted by the University will scrutinize/verify the disability certificates as per G.O.MS.No.31 Women development, Child welfare & disabled welfare (DW) department dated 01-12-2009 and candidates claiming reservation under PwD quota for confirmation of eligibility and the decision of Medical Board specially constituted for the purpose is final and binding on the candidates. 

SERVICE CANDIDATES: Note: Service rendered up to 31-05-2022 will be considered for considering under Service Candidates.

As per G.O.Ms.No.150, dt.11-12-2021 of HM&FW(C1) Dept., Government of A.P, the following are the rules for implementing reservations in case of In-service candidates: 

  • Out of 50% of the seats in State Government quota, 30% of clinical &  50%  of non- clinical seats will be exclusively allocated to in  service candidates  serving  in Government Health Institutions in the State of Andhra Pradesh
  • The Penalty of indemnity bond shall be @Rs.15 lakh  per  year for  non-rendering services after completion of PG Medical/Dental course for in-service candidates.
  • In case of an In-service candidate, in the event she/he leaves the course before its completion or the competent  authority  concludes that  the  In-service candidate  has not shown sufficient progress in the studies or has failed to complete the course  in proper time or fails to resume duty even after the expiry of the  termination  of  the period of deputation or at any time within a period of 10 years after the completion  of the higher studies, it shall be lawful to the  Government  to make  recovery  of  the amount (including pay and allowances,  stipend,  DA, tuition  fee  etc., along  with penalty and applicable interest) spent on  higher  studies or specialized training  from the salary of the candidate

 As per G.O Ms.No. 29, dt.22-03-2018 of HM & FW (C1) Dept., Government of AP, the service candidates will be given weightage of marks for determining their Merit position in the State as noted below: 

(a) Tribal Area means:                 Minimum 2 (two) years of regular and continuous service in PHCs / CHCs/ Area Hospitals/ District Hospitals/ Sample Survey cum assessment units/Leprosy temporary hospitalization wards & any Tribal Institute recognized by Government of Andhra Pradesh.

(b) Rural Area means:                    Minimum 3 (three) years of regular and continuous service in PHCs/CHCs/Area Hospitals/District Hospitals/MCH/Sample Survey cum assessment units/Leprosy Control  Units/Leprosy temporary hospitalization wards/Mobile Medical Units & any Rural Institute recognized by Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Minimum 6 (six) years of continuous regular service in AP Medical & Health Services/ APVVP/ AP Insurance Medical Services/University of Health Sciences.

After completion of specialization, the in-service doctors to be available to serve in Government facilities in the same area (Tribal /Rural / Continuous regular service) from where the reservation was sought, to a minimum of six (6) years, subject  to  the availability of vacancies in respective specialties, through a bond.

Directorate General of health Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has been entrusted with the responsibility to hold on-line counseling for 50% All India Quota Post-Graduate Medical  seats

MCC Conduct four rounds of counselling for seat allotment, round 1, round 2, mop up round, and stray vacancy round. Online registration is mandatory to become eligible for seat allotment. MCC will release seat allotment result based on choice filled, availability of seats in particular institute, reservation criteria and other factors. Seat allotment result will be released separately for every round.
