The Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, Varansi, is a Government College established in the Year 1960. The Institute Of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) is one of the Six institutes of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India and comprises three faculties, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dental Sciences and Faculty of Ayurveda which are residential and co-educational. The College is affiliated to Banaras Hindu University, located in Uttar Pradesh which is an autonomous central university under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, government of India and recognized by National Medical Commission (NMC). It has an annual intake of 100 seats in MBBS, 172 seats in 28 disciplines of Post-Graduate studies and 42 seats in 11 disciplines of Super- Specialization studies.
Medical education in Varanasi, the oldest living city of the world, dates from the days of Sushruta 500 BC. Infact, this is also the history of Medical education in India. Perhaps it is a continuation of this historical perspective that Medical education in Banaras Hindu University took roots in 1920 with the establishment of Department of Ayurveda under Faculty of Oriental Learning and Theology. In the year 1924-25, Ayurvedic Aushadhalaya was established and Years later, in 1960 the Ayurvedic College was converted to the College of Medical Sciences and the The postgraduate medical education, started as in-service program in 1963.
The campus of IMS lies at the front part of university. The gigantic campus contains the medical college, the hospital, the student and resident hostels, the staff quarters, a post office, a temple (BHU Vishwanathji), playgrounds and sporting fields. While the hospital section of the campus is typically crowded and busy, the residential part of the campus is quiet and idyllic punctuated with small parks. It has the state of the art infrastructure with spacious classrooms, Lecture halls to accommodate around 250, Examination rooms, Demonstration rooms, Seminar halls. There are Departmental museums and well-equipped Laboratories. The campus has three hostels for undergraduate men named Punarvasu Atrey Hostel, Ruiya Medical Hostel and Dhanwntri Hostel, and four hostels for postgraduate men named Old P. G. Hostel, New P.G. Hostel, Sushruta hostel Ruiya Annexe. and Married Doctors Hostel. Undergraduate and postgraduate women live in Kasturba Girls Hostel. All hostels run their own messes. There is a huge Auditorium located deep inside the campus. There are good Canteens and Recreation halls are amongst the best. There are exclusive facilities for Indoor and Outdoor Games and Sports facilities. The college has a spacious library area with an excellent collection of Medical books of over 60000 and International and National Journals, back volumes, Atlases, Dictionaries, Directories, Encyclopaedias, Technical Reports. There are separate Reading rooms and the E- library has good Internet facility. The college has pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical disciplines.
It's a great pride to our Country as The IMS-BHU has been listed in the top 100 World's Best Medical colleges for 2021. IMS-BHU was ranked seventh among medical colleges in India in 2020 by India Today, sixth in 2019 by The Week and eight in 2019 by Outlook India. The college is ranked 6th in 2020 by NIRF rankings.

Sir Sunderlal Hospital, IMS - BHU is primarily a teaching and training hospital for the undergraduates, post graduates, super specialties and research courses run by the Institute of Medical Sciences in the various disciplines of medicine, nursing and paramedics. It is the only Tertiary care Hospital providing specialty and Super Specialty services to the health care needs of about 20 Crore population of Eastern UP, Western Bihar, adjoining MP, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand as well as neighboring country of Nepal. It is a unique hospital to provide both Ayurveda and Modern Medicine services under one roof. It also cares for the health of approximately 60,000 people of the University community including students, teachers and employees and their dependents. Besides this, Sir Sunderlal Hospital acts as the main referral hospital for Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi, Military Hospital, NTPC, Coal India, BHEL, and other neighboring Hospitals of the catchment area. Ever since its inception Sir Sunderlal Hospital has been endeavoring to realize the dreams of its founder, Malaviyaji, by alleviating human suffering due to diseases. For the relentless services being rendered to this part of the country, Sir Sunderlal Hospital BHU is essentially reckoned to be the "AIIMS of Eastern UP".

Directorate General of Medical Education and Training, UP conducts the combined (Government and Private) admissions for UP PG Medical . In order to participate in the admission process, it is necessary to fill the Directorate General of Medical Education and Training, UP) medical application form in the online mode https://upneet.gov.in/ or http://www.updgme.in/
The MCC (Medical Counselling Committee)/DGHS conducts Counseling for allotment of Post Graduate (MD/MS/Diploma and MDS) seats to the NEETPG/MDS eligible and qualified candidates in participating Government Medical/Dental Colleges of the country under 50% All India Quota and 100% Central & Deemed University quota every year. All the candidates who have qualified for All India Quota seats on the basis of their rank in NEET PG /MDS conducted by NBE including candidates from Union Territory of J&K will be eligible. The role of MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) of DGHS is limited to allotment of seats to the participating candidates, as per their merit and choice, which starts only after receiving the list/data/Information of successful candidates from National Board of Examinations (NBE) i.e. the NEET (MDS) examination conducting body
There will be four rounds of AIQ counseling i.e. Round 1, Round 2, AIQ Mop-up Rounds and AIQ Stray Vacancy Round (SLA(C) No. 10487 of 2021 before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India). 5. In case of any dispute or vagueness DGME can constitute a special medical board for dispute redressal. |
6. Candidate eligible for the reserved category will be given admission as per rules of the state government, applicable on the date of counseling. |
7. OBC candidates covered by the provisions of the creamy layer will not be entitled for the benefits of OBC category |
8. Candidates who fail to produce required original documents at the time of admission or if any, concealment or falsification of facts comes into the light at the time of admission and thereafter during the course of study will not be entitled to any benefit of having appeared in the entrance examination and/ or any benefit or acquiring a seat subsequently. Legal action would be taken against such candidates. " |
9. Candidates will be checked for their identity at the time of admission. If it does not match it will be counted as unfair means and their candidature will be cancelled. Additional legal action would be taken against such candidates. |
10. If candidate does not participate in online counseling or does not take admission to the allotted seat by the due date he/she shall forfeit any right of admission on the basis of said counseling/allotment. |
11. The option once exercised by the candidate in the online counseling cannot be altered under any circumstances. |
12. No request for re-allotment of seals already allotted in the first and second round will be entertained. |
If seats are left un-allotted at the end of the second round of online counseling, then a “mop up” round of allotment will be organized at a notified date, after due publicity. The purpose of the mop up round of seat allotment will be to ensure that there is no loss of PG seats in the current academic year.
